Applications of Zinc Oxide (ZnO)
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a versatile inorganic metal oxide with extensive applications across multiple industrial, pharmaceutical, and daily chemical sectors, owing to its unique physical and chemical properties-such as high stability, semiconductor characteristics, and biocompatibility. Its uses are diverse and span both traditional and high-tech fields.
Firstly, in the rubber industry, ZnO serves as a core additive. As a key vulcanization activator, it accelerates the chemical reaction between rubber polymers and vulcanizing agents (e.g., sulfur), shortening the vulcanization time while enhancing the rubber's elasticity, tensile strength, and wear resistance. This makes it indispensable in manufacturing tires, rubber seals, and industrial hoses. Additionally, it acts as a reinforcing agent, improving the mechanical stability of rubber products and extending their service life.
Secondly, ZnO is widely used in coatings and pigments. Known as "zinc white," it functions as a high-performance white pigment due to its strong hiding power and excellent lightfastness. It is incorporated into marine coatings to resist saltwater corrosion, architectural paints for long-lasting color retention, and wood coatings to prevent mold growth-thanks to its inherent antibacterial properties that inhibit the proliferation of fungi and bacteria.
In the electronics industry, ZnO's semiconductor properties enable its use in producing electronic components. It is a critical material for manufacturing varistors (voltage-sensitive resistors) that protect circuits from voltage surges, transparent conductive films for touchscreens and liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and substrates for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), where it enhances light emission efficiency.
The pharmaceutical and daily chemical sectors also rely on ZnO. In dermatological products, such as anti-itch ointments and diaper rash creams, it acts as an astringent to soothe inflamed skin and form a protective barrier against irritation. In sunscreens, it works as a physical sunscreen agent by reflecting both UVB and UVA rays, providing broad-spectrum sun protection without penetrating the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.
Finally, ZnO finds applications in agriculture and ceramics. As a feed additive, it supplements zinc (an essential trace element) for livestock and poultry, promoting their growth and immune function. In ceramics, it is used to lower the sintering temperature of ceramic bodies and improve the transparency and mechanical strength of ceramic products, such as sanitary ware and electronic ceramics.
