Boric acid, also called hydrogen borate, boracic acid, orth0boric acid and acidum boricum, is a weak acid of boron often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to other chemical compounds. It has the chemical formula H3BO3 (sometimes written B(OH)3), and exists in the form of colorless crystals or a white powder that dissolves in water. When occurring as a mineral, it is called sassolite.

Application
Glass and fiberglass: Used for the production of optical glass, acid-resistant glass, organoborate glass and other advanced glass and glass fiber, can improve the heat resistance and transparency of glass, improve mechanical strength, shorten the melting time.
Enamel and ceramics: Enamel, ceramic industry for the production of glaze, can reduce the thermal expansion of glaze, reduce the curing temperature of glaze, so as to prevent cracking and deglazing, improve the luster and fastness of products.
Pharmaceutical industry: Used in the production of boric acid ointment, disinfectant, astringent, preservative and so on.
Flame retardant: Adding borate to celluloid material can change its oxidation reaction and promote the formation of "carbonization". It is therefore flame retardant. Boric acid, alone or in combination with borax, has a special effect on reducing the flammability of celluloid insulation, wood, and cotton tires in mattresses.
Metallurgy : It is used as additive and cosolvent in the production of boron steel to make the boron steel have high hardness and good rolling ductility. Boric acid can prevent the surface oxidation of metal welding, brazing and casing welding. It is also the raw material of ferroboron alloy.
Leather: It is used to remove dust from the surface of bare skin and prevent gray spots from occurring on the surface of leather after retanning.
Rust-proof : Boric acid can be used as rust inhibitor, lubricant and thermal oxidation stabilizer. It is added to lubricants, brake fluids, metalworking fluids, water treatment agents and fuel additives.
Binding agent: Boric acid is one of the components in the manufacture of corrugated paper binders, and it is also the adhesive solvent for the manufacture of coolin and dextrin binders. Boric acid greatly improves the strength of wet glue by crosslinking hydroxyl groups.
Nuclear industry : Boron-10 isotope is a highly efficient thermal neutron absorber. It is therefore essential for safety and control systems in nuclear power plants. Special grade (SQ) boric acid is used in the nuclear industry to increase the boron-10 ratio.
Chemical industry: Used in the production of various borates, such as ammonium hydrogen borate, cadmium borotungstate, and so on.
