Ammonium Bifluoride can be used as a chemical reagent, a glass etching agent (often used in combination with hydrofluoric acid), a disinfectant and preservative in the fermentation industry, a solvent for producing metallic beryllium from beryllium oxide, and a surface treatment agent for silicon steel plates. It is also used in the manufacture of ceramics and magnesium alloys, for cleaning and descaling of boiler feedwater systems and steam generation systems, and for acidification treatment of oil field sand and gravel. It is also used as a component of alkylation and isomerization catalysts.
Properties
It appears as white needle-like crystals.
It is prone to deliquescence and agglomeration.
It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol.
When placed in hot water, it decomposes into ammonia and ammonium bifluoride.
When heated, it decomposes into ammonia and hydrogen fluoride.
Its aqueous solution is acidic and has the ability to corrode glass.
