Appearance: Dark red to dark purple rhombic crystals, hygroscopic (absorbs moisture easily).
Melting Point: 196°C (decomposes upon heating).
Density: Crystalline form: 2.7 g/cm³; Melt: 2.8 g/cm³.
Solubility: Highly soluble in water, alcohols, sulfuric acid, and diethyl ether; insoluble in acetone.
Chemical Activity:
Decomposes at its melting point and completely decomposes at boiling point.
Strong oxidizing agent: Contact with organic materials (e.g., alcohol, benzene) can cause combustion or explosion.
Highly corrosive to metals and tissues.

Applications
Metal Surface Treatment
Key material in electroplating industries for chromium plating on bicycles, sewing machines, etc., providing a bright finish and enhancing corrosion resistance.
01
Organic Synthesis
Powerful oxidant for converting alcohols to aldehydes or ketones; used in the production of dyes and pigments.
02
Glass and Ceramic Industries
Manufactures green and yellow pigments to impart vibrant colors to glass and ceramics.
03
Wood Preservation
Acts as a wood preservative to protect against fungal decay and insect damage.
04
Chemical Analysis
Used in laboratories for quantitative analysis, such as titrating organic and inorganic substances as a strong oxidant.
05

Precautions
Do not store with inflammable substance, reducing agent, organic compounds, etc.
Avoid moisture, heat and shock during storage and transportation.
Also avoid contacting with eyes and skin.
Personal protective appliances should be equipped with, such as self-suction respirator, acid -proofing rubber gloves, security coat and boot, chemical-resistant protective glasses.
In case of leakage, the polluted area should be quarantined. Entry and exit should be strictly controlled. The leaked material should be gathered, reclaimed or transported and disposed in the waste-disposal station.
Safety and Environmental Considerations
Health Hazards
Highly toxic if inhaled or contacted; causes severe skin burns, respiratory damage, and eye irritation.
Hexavalent chromium (Cr6) in chromic anhydride is a known carcinogen, linked to lung cancer and DNA damage.
Environmental Risks
Contaminates water and soil; improper disposal leads to ecological harm.
Wastewater and residues must be treated via neutralization and reduction to convert Cr6 to less toxic Cr³ before discharge.
Storage and Handling
Store in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from organic materials, reducing agents, and moisture.
Use protective gear (gloves, goggles, respirators) during handling to prevent exposure.
