Styrene (Styrene), as an important chemical raw material, is widely used in plastics, rubber, coatings and other fields. It is a key monomer of polymer materials such as polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). After years of development, its synthesis method has formed an efficient and stable industrial production system.

Ethylbenzene dehydrogenation method: mainstream process

At present, more than 90% of styrene in the world is produced by ethylbenzene dehydrogenation method. This method uses ethylbenzene as raw material. Under the action of high temperature (600-650℃) and catalyst (such as iron oxide-potassium oxide system), ethylbenzene molecules remove hydrogen atoms to generate styrene. This process technology is mature and highly selective, but it consumes a lot of energy. In recent years, energy consumption has been reduced by optimizing reaction conditions and using new catalysts.

Exploration of other synthetic routes

In addition to ethylbenzene dehydrogenation method, researchers are also exploring other synthetic routes to cope with changes in raw material costs and environmental protection requirements. For example:

Ethylbenzene co-oxidation method: ethylbenzene and propylene are used as raw materials to generate styrene and propylene oxide through oxidation reaction. This method has high-value byproducts, but the process is complex and the investment cost is high.
Toluene methylation method: Toluene and methanol are used to react to generate styrene, but this route is still in the laboratory research stage and has not yet been industrialized.
Environmental protection and efficiency are equally important

With the global chemical industry's attention to sustainable development, styrene production is also moving towards greening. Enterprises reduce energy consumption and emissions by improving catalysts, recovering waste heat, optimizing reaction processes, and developing new catalysts to improve reaction efficiency.

The progress of styrene synthesis technology has not only promoted the development of the polymer materials industry, but also provided important support for the low-carbon transformation of the chemical industry. In the future, with the breakthrough of new energy and catalytic technology, styrene production is expected to further reduce costs and improve environmental performance.
